Predictive modeling of surface roughness and tool wear in hard turning using PCBN cutting tool

This paper presents the models to predict surface roughness and tool wear in finish hard turning with PCBN (Poly-crystal Cubic Boron Nitride) using regression analysis. A set of data obtained from performed experiments in finish turning of hardened 9XC steel has been utilized. The models show that decrease cutting speed and feed rate resulted in better surface roughness and lower tool wear. Increase the depth of cut resulted in faster tool wear but unremarkable effect on surface roughness.
