Temperature generated in the cutting area has considerable effects on wear and wear mechanism of the cutting tool. The research results show that when PCBN cutting tools were used in precision turning of 9CrSi hardened steel with the cutting speeds of 160m/min and 180m/min, three different wear mechanisms were observed: adhesion wear, abrasion wear and heat controlling wear in which the latter was the main mechanism. High temperature generated on the flank faces under the cutting edges made the tool material bulged up locally, facilitating oxidization process and then flaked off causing the cutting edges to be weakened and damaged. When the cutting speeds decreased to 140m/min, adhesion and abrasion wear are the only two main wear mechanisms.
