Evaluation of surface quality of bearing steel SUJ2 when grinding with wheel Al2O3

This paper presents a study on comparison of surface quality of bearing steel SUJ2 when grinding with wheel Al2O3¬ and CBN. The surface quality is evaluated by many parameters such as surface roughness, surface structure, residual stress etc. From the results of the study, it is found that while using wheel Al2O3 the total material which is pressed by abrasives is more than that when using wheel CBN. Also, when using wheel Al2O3 the residual stress is tensile with the value of 407.87 MPa and when using wheel CBN the residual stress is compressive with the value of -83.32 MPa. Moreover, it is found that when using wheel Al2O3 the surface material is hardened while it is tempered when using grinding wheel CBN. Finally, the surface roughness when grinding with Al2O3 is lower than that when grinding with CBN wheel.
