Tool alloy steels are widely applied in industry to made punching and pressing tools. These steels are very difficult to machine when slots are machined by endmill. The paper presents a study of cutting capacity of PVD-TiN and PVD-TiCN coated endmills using to machine slots on the alloy steel X12M workpieces. Experimental results showed that the variable laws of cutting forces when the two types of cutting tools were applied were mainly different in term of their vibrations. Moreover, cutting capacity of TiN coated were better than TiCN coated tools. Flank wear was the main type of wear plastic deformation abrasive mechanism and adhesive mechanism.
