An experimental method to evaluate grinding wheel life by evaluating cutting force norm during cylindrical grinding process

Accurate evaluation of grinding wheel life plays an important role in both economic and technical aspects. It has been done based on norms: cutting capacity ratio, micro properties of the ground surfaces, cutting forces, cutting vibrations and their variations in the grinding process. However, the evaluation lifetime of grinding wheel is difficult because grits distribution law in the wheel, the formation of cutting edges of the grits, self-sharpening grinding are accidental. When evaluate lifetime of grinding wheel by the laws of variation in the tangential and radical forces according to the grinding time, the changes in the graphs of the cutting forces when the grinding wheel starts to be severely worn, are usually not clear so that the results of the evaluation lifetime of grinding wheel are decreased of accuracy. In this study, the author proposed a combination norm presented in the form of Kp = Pz/Py. The results showed that when severe wear was appeared on the grinding wheel, on the graph of Kp started a change much clearer than when independent Px and Py norms were used. This help to evluate the grinding wheel life more easily accurately.
