The performance of TiN coated HSS tools is widely known to be much better than un-coated ones. However, the life of re-sharpened TiN coated HSS tools used on conventional machines is not really understood. In this paper, the authors present results of life regression for TiN coated HSS end mills using to machine slots on quenched and tempered C45 carbon steels. It is very interesting that the optimum cutting conditions for high tool life and cutting length moving towards much higher cutting speeds and feed rates compared with un-coated ones. The reduction of both tool life and cutting length is much sharper when cutting speeds and feed rates are reduced than increased those around the optimum values.
